Viman Nagar's Own Citizens Forum Just Sent Traffic Police a 17-Point List

On August 26, the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum didn't file a complaint. They did a site visit - walked Airport Road with traffic police in tow - and came back with 17 specific, numbered demands.

That level of specificity tells you something: this isn't a vague "traffic is bad" grievance, it's a list from people who've mapped exactly where it breaks down. Signals at Dorabjee Chowk, Datta Mandir, and Gangapuram Chowk reportedly sit dark during peak hours - not broken, just not switched on when they're needed most. The one-way system imposed on the area, meant to smooth things out, hasn't done what it was supposed to; congestion has reportedly gotten worse at several points along it, not better. The forum is asking for parking restrictions on specific stretches - Kailash Market to Datta Mandir, Gangapuram to Datta Mandir - where jams are worst.

And there's a warning baked into the request: once construction starts on the proposed Metro shuttle between Kalyani Nagar and the airport, this corridor's traffic pressure is only going to get worse before it gets better. Residents are asking for fixes now, specifically because they can already see what's coming.

This is a familiar shape by now if you've watched Pune's eastern corridors long enough - Nagar Road a few kilometres away is going through its own version of this exact problem, a flyover project pushing traffic into side streets faster than anyone can adjust. Viman Nagar's version is quieter - a one-way system that just didn't work, signals that don't turn on, no flyover to blame - which almost makes it worse. There's no single big villain here, just a dozen small failures stacked on top of each other, the kind that only shows up when people living there actually walk the road and count them.

What a list like that actually describes, underneath the traffic-engineering language, is a lot of individual drivers making individual trips through the same six or seven choke points, at the same time of day, mostly alone. Dorabjee Chowk doesn't care whether a car is carrying one person or four - it only cares how many cars show up. A one-way system that's failing because of volume doesn't get fixed by volume continuing to climb; it gets fixed by some of that volume not showing up as individual cars in the first place. Three people sharing one trip down Airport Road is three fewer vehicles sitting at a Gangapuram Chowk signal that isn't even turning on.

Same math for anyone running errands along that stretch - a parcel that needs to get from a shop near Kailash Market to a home off Datta Mandir doesn't need its own dedicated trip through a junction residents are actively fighting to de-congest. Bundling it onto a ride someone's already making is one less vehicle idling at a chowk that, by the Citizens Forum's own count, already has seventeen separate things wrong with it.
