A Four-Year Detour Is Coming to the Pune-Solapur Highway

GoVia Team · 23 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

If you make the Pune-Solapur run regularly, mark your calendar for roughly four years out. That's how long the Maharashtra government expects construction to take on the new ₹1,020 crore elevated road cutting through Solapur city itself — and the run-up to it is already changing how people get there.

The project: a 9.66-kilometre, four-lane elevated corridor on NH-65 between Old Pune Naka and Boramani Naka, with six ramps and three smaller bridges, approved by the state cabinet in early September 2026. The state also agreed to hand NHAI the government land it needs without charging occupancy value — the kind of bureaucratic unblock that actually determines whether a cleared project starts moving or sits for another two years. In July, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally chaired a review with NHAI, Railways, BSNL, and state departments all in the room, specifically to push execution speed. NHAI has already put the four-lane elevated section out to tender on a hybrid annuity model.

The detour starts well before Solapur

Here's the part that matters if you're not even going all the way to Solapur: in early August, a Shirur-Haveli MLA and PMRDA officials were already out inspecting internal roads between Hadapsar and Yavat — on the Pune side of this same highway — specifically to widen them as alternate routes for the construction period. That's not a Solapur-city problem. That's a stretch barely past Pune's own edge, years before the elevated road in Solapur itself is anywhere near finished, already being reworked because of it.

Four years is a long construction window for a highway corridor this heavily used. Anyone making this run for work, for family, for business between Pune and the string of towns toward Solapur is going to be living with phased lane closures, diverted traffic, and a moving target for "normal" travel time for most of that stretch.

A different direction than the roads GoVia has already covered

This isn't the Pune-Satara-Kolhapur-Bengaluru run, and it isn't the Mumbai-Pune Expressway crowd either — NH-65 toward Solapur is its own corridor, its own set of towns, its own regular travellers: students, traders, and families making a trip that doesn't get anywhere near the attention Pune's IT-corridor roads do, despite carrying real, sustained traffic of its own.

What four years of construction actually rewards

Nobody waiting on this elevated road gets a say in NHAI's timeline, the hybrid annuity model, or how fast the ramps go up. What's actually in anyone's control is how they ride out a multi-year construction window on a route they can't avoid: splitting a longer, more unpredictable trip across a shared car instead of sitting through every lane closure solo. A four-year disruption is exactly long enough that the daily or weekly version of this trip is worth doing differently — not just once, but for as long as Old Pune Naka to Boramani Naka stays a construction site.
