Pune Metro Line 3's Opening Was Riding on a Trip to Baramati. That Trip Just Got Called Off.
Nobody at PMRDA ever stood up and said "the metro opens the week the Prime Minister is in the district." They didn't have to. When word spread that Narendra Modi had a Pune-district trip scheduled for November 3 - to Baramati, for the dedication of a memorial, nothing to do with trains - it became the date everyone in Hinjewadi was quietly circling anyway. A sitting PM, already in the neighbourhood, with a shovel-ready metro line sitting idle 30 kilometres away. It wrote itself.
As of October 23, it's not happening. Swarajya reported the visit has been postponed, with no new date attached. Whatever informal hope had attached itself to November 3 now has nothing to attach itself to.
A quick reminder of what "ready" actually means here
This isn't a line that's behind on construction. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety cleared the first 12 stations for passenger service back on July 23. By late September, that had grown to 17 of the corridor's 23 stations - Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi all the way to within reach of Shivajinagar. Six stations still need sign-off. Everything else has been sitting certified and unused for three months.
What's actually been holding it back is the Model Code of Conduct tied to the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections - Pune division among the five seats contested. Polling happened October 23. Counting is October 27. The Election Commission's process doesn't fully wind down until October 31, and the MCC stays binding until then. A government can't be seen cutting a ribbon on a big public project while an election is still being counted.
The one date people are naming isn't actually a date
Yugendra Pawar - a trustee at Vidya Pratishthan and Sharad Pawar's grandnephew - has been quoted calling November 16 "probable." That's the extent of it: one person's estimate, not an announcement. PMRDA hasn't confirmed an inauguration date, hasn't confirmed Modi will be the one inaugurating it, and didn't respond when asked directly. Meanwhile a separate station-by-station rollout schedule floating online lists the Maan-Balewadi stretch for December and Balewadi-District Court for March 2027 - numbers that don't exactly scream "any week now."
So where this actually stands: engineering-finished, government-ready-when-it's-ready, and now missing even its unofficial placeholder date.
What this means if you commute through Hinjewadi right now
The people this affects aren't reading PMRDA press statements - they're the ones who've been driving, bussing, or Ola-ing down the Hinjewadi-Wakad-Baner stretch since this line was first promised for March 2026. That's eight months of a commute the metro was supposed to have fixed by now, with no new date to even plan around.
A carpool doesn't have a Model Code of Conduct. It doesn't need a Prime Minister's calendar to clear, and it isn't waiting on a Legislative Council vote count. If you're commuting the Hinjewadi corridor and you've been holding out for the metro, that's a reasonable bet to have made in March. Eight months and nine missed dates later, it might be worth having a backup that doesn't depend on anyone else's schedule.
