Pune's Minimum Auto Fare Just Went Up 20%. Here's the Actual Math on What Changed.
Here's a plain fact, not an opinion: since September 1, 2026, the minimum auto-rickshaw fare in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad - the flat rate for the first 1.5km - went from ₹25 to ₹30. That's a 20% jump, approved by the Regional Transport Authority, and it's the fourth fare revision since 2021, when that same minimum fare was ₹18.
Two more changes came with it. A 25% night surcharge now applies to auto rides between midnight and 5am. And carrying luggage of 60cm x 40cm or larger now costs an extra ₹3. Roughly 1.5 lakh auto-rickshaw drivers across Pune district are covered by this revision.
Why it happened
This wasn't a surprise move. Drivers' unions had been pushing for a revision for a while, citing rising CNG prices as their main justification, and multiple outlets describe the hike as long overdue from the driver side even as commuters worry about the added cost. The RTA's approval settles a debate that had been running since earlier in the year, when base-fare numbers as high as ₹30 per kilometre were floated and disputed before the final structure - minimum fare, night surcharge, luggage fee - was confirmed.
What this actually costs you
Take a short solo trip that used to cost ₹25 flat. It's ₹30 now - before any night surcharge or luggage fee applies. Take that same trip after midnight with a bag, and you're paying the ₹30 base, plus 25% on top, plus ₹3 for the bag. None of that is dramatic on a single ride. It adds up on the trips you take every week.
The part a fare hike doesn't touch
A fare hike changes what a solo ride costs. It doesn't touch what a shared one costs, because splitting a fare, or a carpool trip that was never metered the same way to begin with, between two or three people was already cheaper per person before September 1 - and it's now cheaper by a wider margin, since the solo baseline just moved up and the shared one didn't move at all. If you were on the fence about whether splitting a regular commute is worth the small coordination hassle, this is the month the math tipped further in that direction.
