Pune Airport's New Terminal Is a Genuine Upgrade. The Road to It Still Isn't.

Let's start with the part that's actually gone right. Pune's new terminal at Lohegaon — 52,000 square metres, ten passenger boarding bridges, 34 check-in counters, 25 self-check-in kiosks — began phased operations on July 14, 2026, when Air India's Pune-Delhi flight became the first to move in. By August 5, all eight airlines flying out of Pune had followed. The building takes Pune's handling capacity from roughly 7 million passengers a year to 9 million, which matters because the airport isn't growing gently — it handled just over 1.1 crore (11,005,988) passengers in FY2025-26, up 5.2%, and is tracking toward roughly 10 lakh additional passengers in 2026 alone. On paper, this is exactly the upgrade a city of Pune's size and ambition needed, and it's worth saying plainly: the terminal itself is a win.

Now ask how you're supposed to get there

Here's the part that didn't get a ribbon-cutting. Pune airport has exactly one real road in — a 12-metre stretch that runs through Indian Air Force land via 509 Chowk and Air Force Station Chowk, because Lohegaon is still a defence airbase first. That road is already overwhelmed: commuters report long queues building up every morning and evening between Air Force Station Chowk and 509 Chowk, worsened by traffic signals that don't function reliably and too few police on hand to manage the junctions. The civic fix — a wider 30-metre alternative road, cleared by the Pune Municipal Corporation for ₹30.83 crore — is still stuck at the land-acquisition stage; a review meeting as recent as November 2025 was still ordering officials to speed up that process "without delay," because the IAF plans to shut the existing defence road once its own expansion work there is done. In short: the only road to a 9-million-passenger terminal may soon get narrower before it gets wider.

It isn't just the approach road. Roughly 15,000 vehicles enter the terminal zone on a typical day, and a lot of that volume is private cars and cabs simply idling at the curb waiting on arriving passengers — enough of a problem that the airport announced a 13-15 minute free-stop limit with a ₹500 fine for overstaying, back in February 2026. As of mid-September, the airport's own director confirmed it still hadn't been implemented — the "method of implementation is still under discussion." The airport even ran a dedicated 24-day "passenger service campaign" from September 17 to October 10 — it wrapped up just two days before this was written — specifically to get traffic management under control. Add to that cabs now shuttling between the new terminal and the older building (still being renovated and awaiting final security clearance as of early September), and a multi-level AeroMall car park that passengers describe as humid and poorly ventilated, with its promised additional parking bays reportedly at risk of slipping past 2026 because of a delayed land transfer. A metro link to the airport has an alignment finalised — but that's a detailed project report away from breaking ground, not a near-term fix.

The gap GoVia actually sits in

None of this is a reason to avoid flying out of Pune. It's a reason to rethink how you get to and from Lohegaon in the meantime — because the bottleneck isn't the terminal, it's the last mile around it: one congested road, an under-enforced pickup zone, and a parking structure that's already stretched. That's precisely the kind of trip GoVia was built for. If you're flying out early for a Mumbai or Bengaluru connection and three colleagues from your office are catching the same 6 AM slot, there's no reason for four separate cars to fight through 509 Chowk — split the cost of one ride instead, recover your share of the fuel and tolls, and skip hunting for a parking slot in a mall that's already short on bays. Same logic on the way back: if a flight lands into that single access road at peak hour, sharing the ride out beats sitting in it alone. The terminal got an upgrade. Until the road does too, how you reach it is the only variable actually in your control.
