Nashik Phata Chowk Has Five Transit Systems and No Safe Way Between Them
Stand at Nashik Phata Chowk in Pimpri-Chinchwad's Kasarwadi for five minutes and you'll see all of it happen in front of you: a Metro train pulling into the Nashik Phata (Bhosari) station, a Nigdi–Dapodi BRT bus pulling up to its stop, commuters climbing down from a state transport bus in from Bhosari or Chakan, passengers crossing from Kasarwadi railway station, and a steady current of Pune–Nashik Highway traffic running through the middle of all of it. Five different ways to travel, converging on one junction — and until recently, no safe way to get from any one of them to any other except on foot, through live traffic.
Maha Metro's fix is a multi-modal foot overbridge, the first of its kind in Pimpri-Chinchwad, built specifically to link the Bharat Ratna JRD Tata flyover, the BRT stops on both sides, the service roads, the Metro station, and Kasarwadi railway station into one connected crossing. As of October 2025 it was about 37% built. The target completion is August 2026 — which, as of this month, makes it a structure still roughly ten months from done, with "thousands of citizens" (Maha Metro MD Shravan Hardikar's own description of current footfall) still crossing the way they always have in the meantime: on foot, through the gaps in moving traffic, because there's nothing else to use yet.
And the junction isn't getting simpler. MahaMetro has started the Detailed Project Report for a second line connecting Nigdi to Chakan, which will turn Nashik Phata into a full interchange station alongside Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi — the same junction, carrying even more of the interchange load once that line exists.
This is the gap carpooling is actually good at closing — not the big corridor, but the last unsafe stretch of it. A commuter heading from a Metro or BRT stop toward Bhosari or Chakan doesn't need the overbridge finished if a shared car is already going there door to door; someone coming off a Kasarwadi train doesn't have to time a highway crossing against traffic if a car is already pulling up to collect three people headed the same way. The five systems meeting at Nashik Phata were each built to solve a different piece of this commute. None of them, yet, solve the piece in between.
