Diwali Is a Sunday This Year. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway Already Knows.
Diwali 2026 lands on a Sunday - November 8, Lakshmi Puja, the center of a five-day run from Dhanteras on the 6th through Bhai Dooj on the 10th. That's still a month out from today. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway doesn't seem to care that it's a month out.
Expressway bookings for the four-day Diwali window are reportedly already exhausted weeks in advance of the festival itself - which, worked backward from a November 8 Diwali, means a lot of that booking happened in early-to-mid October, which is to say: now. The forecast for the days around it is specific enough to plan a whole week by. Dhanteras (November 6) is already heavy, 3.5 to 5 hours for a drive that normally takes closer to three; best windows are before 7 AM or after 9 PM. Diwali eve - Naraka Chaturdashi, November 7 - is the worst of the run: 5 to 7 hours, with the afternoon-into-evening stretch from 2 PM to 9 PM named as the single peak hour-for-hour of the entire year on that road. Diwali day itself, November 8, is still very heavy: 4 to 6 hours, best before 6 AM or after 10 PM.
That's not a vague "expect delays" advisory. That's a corridor that has effectively mapped its own worst week a month ahead of time, numbers and all.
What that forecast is actually describing, underneath the hour counts, is an expressway with every lane full of cars making the exact same trip for the exact same reason at the exact same time - home for Diwali. There's no version of that week where the road gets wider. The only lever anyone travelling it actually has is how many of those cars are carrying one person versus four, because a 3.5-hour minimum doesn't change whether there's one person in the car or four - it only changes how many cars the expressway has to carry to move the same number of people.
Same goes for anything travelling alongside the people - the gifts, the sweets, the parcels that always move in both directions around Diwali between Pune and Mumbai. A box sharing space in a car someone's already driving that week doesn't add a vehicle to a road that's already running at 5-to-7-hours-for-a-three-hour-drive. It just rides along. On a week the expressway itself is already warning everyone about a month out, that's not a minor convenience - it's one of the only things anyone travelling that corridor actually controls.
